San Antonio is famous for 2 things:

  1. Six flags.
  2. Sea World.

And famous for one thing … the Alamo. The Alamo was an 18th-century Spanish mission now preserved as a museum, marks the location of the famous 1836 battle for Texan independence from Mexico. The most quirky part of the city is the miles-long Riverwalk lined with numerous cafes, restaurants and pubs. It’s a perfect way to get some steps on your Fitbit and it is a pedestrian’s heaven. I guess it is because of these things it is in the top 10 cities to see in the USA. With the vivid nightlife scene it is a perfect weekend getaway city for some.

My friends and I planned our trip in such a way that we were able to avoid Six Flags (I am not into amusement parks) and Sea-World (I am saving it for San Diego). What was left was great food, an exciting night-life, Riverwalk and city’s vintage architecture. With 3 hour drive we were at the Drury Plaza, our hotel in downtown San Antonio. The look and feel of the hotel was pretty vintage and the views from our room on 19th floor were magnificent. As usual I persuaded my friends to go to the Hard Rock for dinner. After dinner, we decided to enjoy the night-life along the Riverwalk. One of the most weird pubs of all was Coyote Ugly, with their perfect objectification of women and all the gogo dancers. We ended the night after heavy drinking at an Irish pub with a live performance of the Bohemian Rhapsody.

Some of us were expecting hangovers the next morning but none of us had one. The highlight of the day was the Natural Bridge Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a drive through wildlife ranch where you can feed lots of animals like Zebra, Emu, Llama,  Fallow Deer, Ostrich et cetera. After spending a few hours in the sanctuary some of us relaxed in our rooms and some at the rooftop hotel pool. Trips can be exciting if you travel with like minded people. The best example for that was when all of us wanted to go for a hookah. Again Google came to our rescue and led us to a Moroccan hookah lounge. It was a neat place and best part was that the food was exquisite.

I had booked a haunted pub crawl for that night. The pub crawl included 4 haunted pubs and a guide who told us the stories of each haunted pub. Haunted pubs were not shocking for me as I do believe in ghosts and San Antonio has such an elaborate history. Some of the stories were creepy to the point and to add to the effect we had our own EMF ghost detectors. Sadly we were not lucky enough to run into any ghosts but I do encourage you to go as it is a lot of fun. There are so many bars in San Antonio that one will never run out of options and each has its unique characteristic.

Next morning we explored the city’s architecture and best street to do that was Kingsville street. It is lined with beautiful multi-million dollar mansions. When we got famished, Las Canarias was our saviour with the lavish brunch. It was yummy. By the afternoon we were on our way back to Houston. It was an interesting weekend getaway.
